Scholarship Opportunities Available
Scholarship opportunities are available for students pursuing careers in nursing and other allied healthcare professionals. The purpose of the scholarships is to encourage excellence by providing financial assistance.
Dr. Jean M. Modert, MD was an honored, highly respected physician in Mt. Vernon, Illinois after his service to our country where he gained several decorations; Dr. Modert served our community from August 1946 until his death on August 31, 1985. Dr. Jean M. Modert's family established an endowed scholarship in honor of his legacy.
Purpose:
The Dr. Jean M. Modert Scholarship was created to encourage excellence and financial support to current employees of SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital, and to current students, seeking a degree in a healthcare field or additional certification / credentialing, especially those pursuing careers in nursing and other allied health care professionals. Scholarship amounts may vary with a minimum allocation of $1,000 per year.
Applications are due May 1, 2024 at 4:30 pm CST.
Dr. Jean M. Modert Scholarship Application for SSM Employees and Students
Eligibility:
SSM Health Illinois Employees:
- Be a full- or part-time (benefit eligible) employee, in good standing and employed with SSM Health Illinois for a minimum of 1 year (12 consecutive months) at the time of application.
- Be an employee seeking to develop his/her technical or professional abilities in an area identified as an appropriate need in the workforce at SSM Health Illinois.
- Show proof of enrollment/acceptance in an independently established course, professional accreditation, or continuing education program.
- Hold a minimum of a 3.0 GPA or above, on a 4.0 GPA scale, or an equivalent rating on a comparative GPA scale.
- Submit a letter detailing the need and benefits of the education or training.
- Complete all required application information and submit to the Foundation office by May 1, 2024 at 4:30 pm CST.
Students:
- Be a college student majoring in a health care program; a vocational student seeking an associate degree in a health care field; or a student seeking a post graduate degree in a health care field.
- Have permanent residence in Franklin, Hamilton, Jefferson, Marion, Perry, Washington, or Wayne counties for at least one (1) year prior to the application date OR be a dependent of an SSM Health Illinois employee.
- Show proof of enrollment in an accredited technology center, community college or college/university, and show evidence of acceptance to an academic program of study in a health care field.
- Show proof of having completed at least one-half of an established curriculum or degree program, prior to receiving the funds.
- Hold a minimum of a 3.0 GPA or above, on a 4.0 GPA scale, or an equivalent rating on a comparative GPA scale.
- Complete all required application information and submit to the Foundation office by May 1, 2024 at 4:30 pm CST.
Application must include:
- Scholarship application – all sections completed.
- Transcripts – from schools attended.
- Official verification of acceptance into a health professional academic program or official verification of current enrollment in good standing.
- Completion of a personal statement explaining financial need, career goals and benefits of education being pursued.
- At least one letter of reference (please see details on application).
How Much Can I Receive?
Scholarship amounts may vary with a minimum allocation of $1,000 per year.
How Are Recipients Chosen?
A selection committee comprised of SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation board trustees and administrative staff reviews and selects the recipient(s). All applicant(s) will receive a letter of acceptance or denial in mid-June.

Peg Edwards Nursing Scholarship was established to honor Peg’s dedication to the nursing profession. She was a Registered Nurse for over 39 years and received her bachelor’s degree in Nursing in 2009. This scholarship’s purpose is to support a student whose intention is to obtain a bachelor’s degree in Nursing and who demonstrates the initiative and leadership qualities to make a positive contribution to the healthcare industry by working in the field of nursing. Applications must be postmarked by May 1, 2024.
